Taxonomy
Saurocetes was named by Burmeister (1871). It is the type genus of Saurocetidae.
It was replaced with Pontoplanodes by Ameghino (1891) and Trouessart (1898); it was replaced with Saurodelphis by Burmeister (1891), Abel (1901), Palmer (1904), Rovereto (1915), Simpson (1945), Pilleri and Gihr (1979) and Cozzuol (1985).
It was assigned to Zeuglodonta by Ameghino (1889); to Saurocetidae by Ameghino (1891); to Odontoceti by de Muizon (1988); to Ischyrorhynchinae by Cozzuol (1996) and Cozzuol (2010); and to Iniidae by Hamilton et al. (2001), Fordyce and de Muizon (2001), Geisler et al. (2012) and Berta (2017).
It was replaced with Pontoplanodes by Ameghino (1891) and Trouessart (1898); it was replaced with Saurodelphis by Burmeister (1891), Abel (1901), Palmer (1904), Rovereto (1915), Simpson (1945), Pilleri and Gihr (1979) and Cozzuol (1985).
