Taxonomy

Iniana was named by Gray (1846). It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by Gill (1873).

Synonyms

Stenodelphininae was named by Miller (1923). It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Pontoporiinae by Scheffer and Rice (1963); it was synonymized subjectively with Iniidae by Mead and Brownell (2005).

It was assigned to Delphinidae by Miller (1923) and Hay (1930); and to Platanistidae by Simpson (1945), Fraser and Purves (1960) and Gondar (1966).
Plicodontinia mourai was named by Miranda-Ribeiro (1938) [Miranda-Ribeiro (1938) does not list the specimen number of the type . Bergqvist et al. (1999) indicate that the type specimen is now lost. ]. It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Juruá River, which is in a Miocene fluvial-lacustrine horizon in the Solimoes Formation of Brazil.

It was considered a nomen dubium by de Muizon (1988); it was considered a nomen dubium by Fordyce and de Muizon (2001) and Geisler et al. (2012).
Pontoplanodidae was named by Ameghino (1894).

It was considered an invalid subgroup of Iniidae by Barnes et al. (1985).

It was assigned to Odontoceta by Ameghino (1894).
