Ischyrorhynchus vanbenedeni was named by Ameghino (1891) [No type specimen number is listed by Ameghino 1891.]. It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Rio Parana, which is in a Tortonian marginal marine horizon in the Entre Rios Formation of Argentina.
