Taxonomy
Loxolithax stocktoni was named by Wilson (1973). Its type specimen is UCMP 34576, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Dacelite Quarry, which is in a Tortonian marine shale in the Monterey Formation of California.
It was recombined as Salumiphocaena stocktoni by Barnes (1985), Fajardo-Mellor et al. (2006) and Uhen et al. (2008).
