Oplosaurus was named by Gervais (1852). Its type is Oplosaurus armatus.
It was synonymized subjectively with Cetiosaurus by Dollo (1889); it was synonymized subjectively with Pelorosaurus by Lydekker (1889), Lydekker (1890), Huene (1909), Romer (1956), Romer (1966), Steel (1970) and McIntosh (1990); it was synonymized subjectively with Ornithopsis by Zittel (1890); it was considered a nomen dubium by Naish and Martill (2001).
