Ferugliotheriidae was named by Bonaparte (1986). Its type is Ferugliotherium.
It was assigned to Plagiaulacoidea by Krause et al. (1992); to Gondwanatherioidea by Krause and Bonaparte (1993); to Mammalia by Kielan-Jaworowska and Hurum (2001); to Gondwanatheria by McKenna and Bell (1997), Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (2004); and to Multituberculata by Bonaparte (1986), Krause (1993), Rougier et al. (2009).
