Tetraphalerinae was named by Crowson (1962). It is extant. Its type is Tetraphalerus.

It was reranked as the family Tetraphaleridae by Crowson (1981); it was considered an invalid subgroup of Ommatidae by Tan et al. (2012).

It was assigned to Cupedoidea by Crowson (1981); and to Ommatidae by Lawrence and Newton (1995), Bouchard et al. (2011), Li et al. (2021), Cai et al. (2022).
