Pontolis magnus
Taxonomy
Pontoleon magnus was named by True (1907). Its type specimen is USNM 3792, a skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Empire, which is in a Tortonian coastal sandstone in the Empire Formation of Oregon. It is the type species of Pontolis, Pontoleon.
It was considered a nomen dubium by Repenning and Tedford (1977); it was recombined as Pontolis magnus by True (1905), True (1909), Kellogg (1922), Hay (1930), Mitchell (1968), Deméré (1994), Deméré et al. (2003), Barnes (2008), Boessenecker and Churchill (2013), Berta (2018), Magallanes et al. (2018), Berta et al. (2018), Biewer et al. (2020).
