Pleurotomaria progne was named by Billings (1860). It is not a trace fossil.

It was misspelled as Liospira progue by Sloan and Webers (1987); it was recombined as Liospira progne by Ulrich and Scofield (1897), Troedsson (1928), Wilson (1951), Liberty (1969), Wagner (2023).
