It was synonymized subjectively with Delphinidae by Mead and Brownell (2005); it was reranked as the subfamily Steninae by Mead (1975), Barnes et al. (1985), Vidal (1991), Fordyce and Barnes (1994), Fordyce et al. (1995), Buchholtz and Schur (2004) and Foekens (2008).
It was assigned to Delphinoidea by Fraser and Purves (1960); and to Delphinidae by Mead (1975), Barnes et al. (1985), Vidal (1991), Fordyce and Barnes (1994), Fordyce et al. (1995), Buchholtz and Schur (2004) and Foekens (2008).
