Portlockiella was named by Knight (1945) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise C Serp Sepkoski's reference number: 797]. Its type is Portlockiella kentuckyensis. It is the type genus of Portlockiellidae.
It was assigned to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Portlockiellidae by Batten (1956), Knight et al. (1960), Bouchet et al. (2005).
