Epiodon was named by Rafinesque (1814). It is extant.
It was synonymized subjectively with Ziphius by Owen (1870); it was considered a nomen dubium by Hershkovitz (1966).
It was assigned to Epiodontina by Gray (1865); to Ziphiidae by Gray (1866); to Epiodontidae by Gray (1868) and Gray (1871); and to Physeteridae by Palmer (1904).
