Bradypidae was named by Gray (1821). It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Megalonychidae by Adam (1999); it was corrected as Bradypodidae by Bonaparte (1850), Flower (1883), Cope (1889), Cope (1889), Flower and Lydekker (1891), Gadow (1898), Jaekel (1911), Nowak (1991), Wilson and Reeder (2005) and Varela et al. (2019).

It was assigned to Tarigradae by Gray (1821); to Ungulata by Gray (1825); to Bruta by Bonaparte (1850); to Pilosa by Flower (1883); to Edentata by Cope (1889) and Flower and Lydekker (1891); to Xenarthra by Cope (1889) and Gadow (1898); to Tardigradi by Jaekel (1911); to Xenarthra by Nowak (1991); to Folivora by Wilson and Reeder (2005); and to Eufolivora by Varela et al. (2019).
