Cyclotosaurus was named by Fraas (1889).

It was assigned to Capitosauridae by Watson (1919), Haughton (1925), Welles and Cosgriff (1965), Kuhn (1971), Paton (1976), Ingavat and Janvier (1981) and Carroll (1988); to Cyclotosaurinae by Schoch and Milner (2000); to Mastodonsauridae by Damiani (2001); to Capitosauroidea by Schoch (2013); and to Cyclotosauridae by Marzola et al. (2017).

Synonyms

Labyrinthodon leptognathus was named by Owen (1841). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Coten End Quarry, which is in an Anisian channel sandstone/marl in the Bromsgrove Sandstone Formation of the United Kingdom.

It was recombined as Cyclotosaurus leptognathus by Ingavat and Janvier (1981); it was considered a nomen vanum by Welles and Cosgriff (1965); it was considered a nomen dubium by Damiani (2001).
Hercynosaurus was named by Jaekel (1914).

It was considered a nomen vanum by Welles and Cosgriff (1965) and Kuhn (1971); it was considered a nomen dubium by Damiani (2001).

It was assigned to Hemispondyla by Jaekel (1914).
Hercynosaurus carinidens was named by Jaekel (1914). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Baerecke-Limpricht clay pit, Halberstadt (bed 16), which is in a Rhaetian floodplain sandstone in the Trossingen Formation of Germany.

It was considered a nomen vanum by Welles and Cosgriff (1965) and Kuhn (1971); it was considered a nomen dubium by Damiani (2001).
Capitosaurus was named by Münster (1836). It is the type genus of Capitosauroidea, Capitosauridae.

It was reranked as Labyrinthodon (Capitosaurus) by Owen (1859); it was considered a nomen vanum by Welles and Cosgriff (1965); it was considered a nomen vanum by Paton (1976); it was considered a nomen dubium by Schoch and Milner (2000).

It was assigned to Labyrinthodontes by Meyer (1845); to Labyrinthodontidae by d'Orbigny (1849); to Labyrinthodon by Owen (1859); and to Capitosauridae by Watson (1919), Haughton (1925) and Kuhn (1971).
