Turkanapithecus was named by Leakey and Leakey (1986). It is not extant. Its type is Turkanapithecus kalakolensis.
It was assigned to Hominoidea by Leakey and Leakey (1986); to Nyanzapithecinae by Rossie and MacLatchy (2006); and to Proconsulidae by Zalmout et al. (2010).
