Bryanictis was named by MacIntyre (1966) [named as subgenus of Protictis by MacIntyre 1966; raised to genus, as suggested by Van Valen 1969].
It was synonymized subjectively with Protictis by Rose (1981), Hartman (1986), Williamson and Lucas (1993); it was reranked as Protictis (Bryanictis) by Flynn and Galiano (1982).
It was assigned to Protictis by Flynn and Galiano (1982); to Didymictidae by Gingerich and Winkler (1985), Fox and Youzwyshyn (1994), Polly (1997), Secord (1998), Flynn (1998), Cifelli et al. (1999); and to Viverravidae by Rigby (1980), Winterfeld (1982), Meehan and Wilson (2002), Scott et al. (2013).
