Mithrax was named by Latreille (1817) [Sepkoski's age data: T Plio R]. It is extant. Its type is Mithrax pilosus. It is the type genus of Mithracinae.
It was assigned to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002), Kiessling (2003); to Mithracidae by Luque et al. (2017); and to Mithracinae by Todd and Collins (2005), Schweitzer et al. (2010), Schweitzer et al. (2020).
