Spirifer fritschi was named by Schellwien (1892).

It was corrected as Spirifer fritschii by Schellwien (1900); it was recombined as Choristites fritschii by Ustritsky and Chernyak (1963); it was recombined as Choristites fritschi by Gauri (1965), Tazawa and Ibaraki (2023).
