Rotalia truncatulinoides was named by d'Orbigny (1839).

It was recombined as Globorotalia truncatulinoides by Kennett (1973) and MacFadden (1987); it was recombined as Globorotalia (Truncorotalia) truncatulinoides by Kennett and Srinivasan (1983) and Lam and Leckie (2020).
