Ocenebra was named by Leach in Gray (1847) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 909]. It is extant.

It was reranked as Murex (Ocenebra) by Hörnes and Auinger (1885), Tate (1888); it was reranked as Murex (Ocinebra) by Clark (1915), Dickerson (1916); it was corrected as Ocinebra by Bohm (1926), Nagao (1928); it was misspelled as Ocinebra by Dall (1889), Addicott (1970), Kensley (1972), Kensley and Pether (1986), Harzhauser and Mandic (2001), Harzhauser (2002), Sepkoski (2002), Landau et al. (2007), Darragh (2017).

It was assigned to Murex by Hörnes and Auinger (1885), Tate (1888), Clark (1915), Dickerson (1916); to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Muricidae by Dall (1889), Bohm (1926), Nagao (1928), Addicott (1970), Kensley (1972), Kensley and Pether (1986), Harzhauser and Mandic (2001), Harzhauser (2002), Landau et al.
