Cyrtometopus tumidus was named by Angelin (1854).

It was recombined as Cheirurus (Nieszkowskia) tumidus by Schmidt (1881); it was recombined as Nieszkowskia tumidus by Bohlin (1949); it was recombined as Acanthoparypha tumida by Whittington and Evitt (1954); it was recombined as Nieszkowskia tumida by Hansen and Nielsen (2003).
