Globigerina seminulina was named by Schwager (1866).

It was recombined as Sphaeroidinella seminulina by Kennett (1973); it was recombined as Sphaeroidinellopsis seminulina by Kennett and Srinivasan (1983), Haig (2012), Lam and Leckie (2020).
