Filicites (Sphenopteris)
The name Sphenopteris was first validly published by Brongniart (1822: 233) for a section of the fossil-genus Filicites Schloth. ex Brongn. (Brongniart, 1822). The taxon was shortly afterwards raised in rank to genus by Sternberg (1825) but who illegitimately altered the spelling to Sphaenopteris. Brongniart (1828a,b) accepted the change in rank but reverted to the original spelling, Sphenopteris (see also Sternberg, 1833), and this is how the name is normally used today.
It was reranked as Sphenopteris by Knowlton (1919), Lakhanpal et al. (1976), Lapasha and Miller (1985), Chandra and Tewari (1991), McLoughlin et al. (1995), Dilcher et al. (2005), Cleal and Thomas (2023).
It was assigned to Filicites by Brongniart (1822); to Pteridophyta by Knowlton (1919); to Filicales by Lakhanpal et al. (1976), Lapasha and Miller (1985), Chandra and Tewari (1991), McLoughlin et al. (1995); to Sphenopteridae by Dilcher et al. (2005); and to Lyginopteridales by Cleal and Thomas (2023).

If no rank is listed, the taxon is considered an unranked clade in modern classifications. Ranks may be repeated or presented in the wrong order because authors working on different parts of the classification may disagree about how to rank taxa.
