Taxonomy
Venericardia tridentata was named by Say (1826) [DISTRIBUTION: Pliocene; Western Atlantic. TYPE: Holotype missing (ANSP).]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Cardita tridentata by Say (1832), Conrad (1845), Conrad (1846), Tuomey and Holmes (1855), Holmes (1858), Holmes (1860); it was recombined as Actinobolus tridentata by Conrad (1862); it was recombined as Venericardia (Pleuromeris) tridentata by Dall (1903); it was recombined as Glans (Pleuromeris) tridentata by Gardner (1943); it was recombined as Cardita (Pleuromeris) tridentata by DuBar (1958); it was recombined as Pleuromeris tridentata by Spencer and Campbell (1987), Hendy et al. (2008).
