Aulacothyris was named by Douville (1880) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Anis J Oxfo Sepkoski's reference number: 1,538]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Aulacothyrini.
It was reranked as Waldheimia (Aulacothyris) by Bittner (1890).
It was assigned to Waldheimia by Bittner (1890); to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); to Zeilleriinae by Williams et al. (2006); and to Aulacothyrinae by Baeza-Carratalá and García Joral (2014).
It was reranked as Waldheimia (Aulacothyris) by Bittner (1890).
