Taxonomy
Augustasaurus hagdorni was named by Sander et al. (1997). Its type specimen is FMNH PR 1974 and is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is Muller Canyon, which is in an Illyrian marginal marine mudstone in the Favret Formation of Nevada.

Rieppel et al. 2002Pistosaur with maxillary tooth row extending backwards beyond posterior margin of orbit to level below anterior corner of upper temporal fossa; frontals paired; frontal entering anteromedial margin of upper temporal fossa without forming descending flange; para-basisphenoid with ventrally projecting sagittal crest; posterior palatine vacuities present (convergent in Plesiosaurus); epipterygoid broad dorsally; dorsal neural spines terminating in distinct “saw-cut” rugosities, middle dorsal vertebrae with double facets of unfinished bone near posterior end of neural spine; posteriorly slanted transverse processes with round rib articular facets.
