Uraster obtusus was named by Forbes (1848). It is not extant.
It was recombined as Palaeaster obtusus by Salter (1857); it was recombined as Stenaster obtusus by Stürtz (1886), Stürtz (1893), Spencer (1914), Schuchert (1915), Spencer (1927), Owen (1965), Spencer and Wright (1966), Jell and Baillie (1984), Dean (1999), Dean Shackleton (2005), Hansen et al. (2005) and Blake et al. (2016).
It was recombined as Palaeaster obtusus by Salter (1857); it was recombined as Stenaster obtusus by Stürtz (1886), Stürtz (1893), Spencer (1914), Schuchert (1915), Spencer (1927), Owen (1965), Spencer and Wright (1966), Jell and Baillie (1984), Dean (1999), Dean Shackleton (2005), Hansen et al.
