Paloplotherium was named as a genus.

It was synonymized subjectively with Plagiolophus by Carroll (1988); it was reranked as Plagiolophus (Paloplotherium) by Remy (2000).

It was assigned to Perissodactyla by Owen (1848); to Palaeotheriinae by Cope (1881); and to Plagiolophus by Remy (2000).
