Murex articulatus was named by Reeve (1845) [DISTRIBUTION: Early Miocene-Recent; Caribbean.]. Its type specimen is Holotype (no number), a shell, and it is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Siratus articulatus by Fair (1976); it was recombined as Chicoreus (Siratus) articulatus by Vokes (1989).
