Typhis alatus was named by Sowerby (1850) [DISTRIBUTION: Miocene-Pliocene; Dominican Republic.]. Its type specimen is BMNH GG 20084, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Typhis (Talityphis) alatus by Woodring (1959), Gertman (1969), Vokes (1983); it was recombined as Typhina alata by Landau and Marques da Silva (2010).
