Holaspis sericeus was named by Lankester (1873). It is the type species of Poraspis, Palaeaspis.
It was recombined as Palaeaspis sericeus by Woodward (1891); it was recombined as Poraspis sericea by Kiaer (1932), Kiaer and Heintz (1935).
