Coptochetus was named by Cossmann (1889) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than T Ol-u Sepkoski's reference number: 794].

It was assigned to Buccininae by Pacaud and Le Renard (1995); and to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002).
