Lepicythara was named by Olsson (1964) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l T Plio Sepkoski's reference number: 549]. Its type is Cythara terminula.

It was assigned to Mangeliinae by Olsson (1964), Woodring (1970), Perrilliat (1992); to Turridae by Todd (2001); and to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002).
