Sphenotus washingtonense was named by Girty (1910). Its type specimen is USNM 155899, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was corrected as Sphenotus washingtonensis by Pojeta (1969), Hoare (1993).

Hoare 1993Sphenotus with subparallel dorsal and ventral margins; anterior margin sharply convex; posterior margin doubly truncate, ventral portion sloping anteriorly, dorsal portion sloping posteriorly; escutcheon appears to be present; distinct umbonal carina extends to posteroventral margin; second carina divides posterodorsal area; surface ornamented by fine growth lines, angulated as they cross carinae; internal features not observed.
