Triumphis dilemma was named by Kilburn and Tankard (1975) [DISTRIBUTION: Early Pliocene; South Africa.]. Its type specimen is SAM-K4565, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Austriumphis dilemma by Vermeij (1997).
