Hercotrema was named by Jin (1989). Its type is Hercotrema bulbicostatum.

It was assigned to Rhynchonellida by Jin et al. (1993); to Rostricellulinae by Jin and Chatterton (1997); and to Trigonirhynchiinae by Williams et al. (2002).
