Taxonomy
Herpetocetus bramblei was named by Whitmore and Barnes (2008) [aff. Herpetocetus Van Beneden, 1872, Barnes 1977, table 6]. Its type specimen is UCMP 82465, a partial skull (left half of a braincase), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Opal Cliffs 1, which is in a Messinian/Zanclean open shallow subtidal sandstone in the Purisima Formation of California.
