Glyptodon ornatus was named by Owen (1845).
It was recombined as Hoplophorus ornatus by Ameghino (1889); it was recombined as Lomaphorus ornatus by Lydekker (1894); it was recombined as Neosclerocalyptus ornatus by Paula Couto (1957), Zurita et al. (2004), Zurita et al. (2009), Soibelzon et al. (2010).
