Baluchimys was named by Flynn et al. (1986). Its type is Baluchimys barryi. It is the type genus of Baluchimyinae.

Flynn et al. 1986Moderately lophodont baluchimyine; metaloph joins large metaconule to hypocone and is weaker between metacone and metaconule; short mesolophule; dp4 with four major oblique lophs, a fifth low loph, and an anterolabial shelfand cingulum; lower molars with narrow metalophulid II that usually fails to reach the lingual wall of molars, indistinct hypoconulids, and narrow, transversely elongated protoconids and hypoconids; straight anterior wall on m2; on m1 the anterior width approximately equals posterior width, m3 short and narrow.
