Ceratophrynidae was named by Tschudi (1838). It is not extant.

It was reranked as the subfamily Ceratophryinae by Baez and Peri (1990), Sanchiz (1998) and Evans et al. (2008).

It was assigned to Anura by Carroll (1988); to Leptodactylidae by Baez and Peri (1990) and Sanchiz (1998); to Hyloidea by Evans et al. (2008); and to Neobatrachia by Evans et al. (2014).
