Taxonomy
Occitanomys provocator was named by de Bruijn (1976) [The generic affiliation was given with a question mark.]. Its type specimen is IVAU PI 232, a tooth (M1 sup. sin.), and it is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is Chomateri, which is in a Miocene fluvial siltstone/claystone in the Pikermi Formation of Greece.

H. de Bruijn 1976O.? provicator differs from all Western European Occitanomys species by the absence of: t1 bis in M1 and M2, a posterior spur on t1 and t3 of M1, and the longitudinal ridge in m1 and m2. O.? provicator is larger than O.? neutrum and does not have a well developed antero-central cusp in m1.
