Umbonulidae was named by Canu (1904). It is extant. Its type is Umbonula.

It was assigned to Cheilostomatida by Lee et al. (1997); to Ascophora by Bassler (1953), Cheetham (1962), Pouyet (2000); to Cheilostomata by Bock (2006); and to Lepralielloidea by Di Martino and Taylor (2015).
