Lunulariidae was named by Levinsen (1909). It is extant. Its type is Lunularia.

It was synonymized subjectively with Lunulitidae by Bassler (1953).

It was assigned to Cheilostomata by Bock (2006); and to Lunulitoidea by Håkansson et al. (2023).
