Ranella plicata was named by Reeve (1844) [DISTRIBUTION: Pliocene-Recent; Peru-California.]. It is extant. Its type specimen is UMCZ I.100.275, a shell.
It was synonymized subjectively with Eupleura muriciformis by Grant and IV and Gale (1931); it was recombined as Eupleura plicata by Herbert (2005), Landau and Marques da Silva (2010).
