Taxonomy
Trionyx ferox was named by Schneider (1783). It is extant. It is the type species of Platypeltis.

It was recombined as Platypeltis ferox by Hay (1908), Hay (1930); it was recombined as Apalone ferox by Meylan (1987), Meylan (1987), Weisrock and Janzen (2000), van Dijk et al. (2014).
