Murex lugubris was named by Broderip (1833) [DISTRIBUTION: Recent; eastern Pacific.]. It is extant. It is the type species of Muregina.
It was recombined as Ceratostoma lugubre by Keen (1971); it was recombined as Ocenebra lugubris by Vokes (1971); it was recombined as Muregina lugubris by Vermeij (1998), DeVries (2005).
