Cypraea mus was named by Linnaeus (1758) [DISTRIBUTION: Recent; Caribbean.]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Siphocypraea (Muracypraea) mus by Olsson and Petit (1967); it was recombined as Barycypraea mus by Doneddu and Manunza (1996); it was recombined as Muracypraea mus by DeVries et al. (2006), Landau and Marques da Silva (2010), Landau and Groves (2011).
