Trochus ater was named by Lesson (1830) [DISTRIBUTION: Pliocene-Recent; Peru-Chile.]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Monodonta atra by Potiez and Michaud (1838); it was recombined as Chlorostoma ater by Mörch (1850); it was recombined as Tegula atra by Dall (1909); it was recombined as Tegula (Chlorostoma) atra by Marincovich (1973); it was recombined as Chlorostoma atrum by DeVries (2007), Nielsen (2013).
