Orca paleorca was named by Matsumoto (1937) [no specimen number listed in Matsumoto 1937
]. It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Naganuma, which is in a Calabrian marine conglomerate in the Sanuki Formation of Japan.
It was recombined as Orcinus paleorca by Hershkovitz (1966), Kawamura (1991).
