Athyris gerardi was named by Diener (1899).

It was recombined as Athyris (Cliothyris) gerardi by Tschernyschew (1902); it was recombined as Spirigera (Athyris) gerardi by Diener (1903); it was recombined as Spirigera gerardi by Diener (1915); it was recombined as Athyris (Cleiothyridina) gerardi by Reed (1944); it was recombined as Cleiothyridina gerardi by Cooper (1957); it was recombined as Himathyris gerardi by Waterhouse (1985), Shen et al. (2003), Xu et al. (2018).
